What are your opening hours?

 

Mon - Fri:  9am - 5:30pm

Sat: 9am - 1:30pm

Sun: Closed

Do I need to know my prescription when visiting?

 

If you're an existing patient, don't worry as all prescription records are kept on file so there is no need for you to be sure of your prescription.

 

If you're a new patient however, we will have to undergo an eye exam to determine your prescription, unless you have an in-date, valid prescription from a qualified practitioner.

How often should I have my eyes examined?

 

If you are:

  • Aged 15 or below - once every year

  • Aged 16-69 years - once every 2 years

  • Aged 70 years and over - every year

  • Diabetic and Glaucoma patients - every year

  • Aged 40 years and over with an immediate relative with Glaucoma - every year

 

The above are general guidelines and more regular eye exams may be required in some cases. Your optician will always advise you of this. Please contact us if you are still unsure.

 

When should my child have their first eye exam?

 

Children can be tested at any age but our recommendation for a child's first eye examination is around 2 years old. Sooner if you feel your child may be struggling with an eye problem, our measure is that it's better to be safe than sorry. We always strive to make our exams as fun as possible for the child's benefit. 

 

How long does an eye exam last?

 

The length of an eye examination varies depending on the patient being examined, but a typical appointment at Matthews Opticians usually lasts between 30-45 minutes. 

 

Do I receive NHS entitlements?

 

You may be entitled to a free eye examination for a number of reasons. Some of these include: if you are aged 60 or over, suffer from diabetes or glaucoma, you're aged 16 and under or if you are aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education.

 

Will I be suitable for contact lenses?

 

Contact lenses can be a great choice for those who want to partake in sports and other activities and also for those want the practicality of seeing clearly without the need for glasses. Fortunately, contact lens technology has improved drastically over the past few years meaning we can fit them according to your requirements.

Do I still need glasses if I wear contact lenses?

 

We always recommend our patients to keep a pair of up-to-date glasses in case you are temporarily unable to wear your contact lenses.

 

I've lost my contact lenses, can you help?

 

Of course! We keep a wide range of contact lenses in stock, if you've lost yours give us a call or come into the practice and we'll look to provide you with a replacement.

 

I'm very worried about an eye problem, can you see me urgently?

If you feel you are suffering from a serious eye problem we encourage you to get in touch with the practice as soon as possible so we can discuss the problem and get to the crux of the matter in time. 

 

How do I book an appointment? 

We strive to make it as convenient as possible for you to arrange an appointment. If you want to book online follow through to our MySight portal here.

Accessibility and parking?

Wheelchair-accessible testing is available on the ground floor. Our practice also benefits from the ramp access and single-line parking directly outside for blue badge holders.
